Technical Leadership
This Technical Leadership workshop is a course for Technical Leaders from an experienced technical leader of almost 25 years. This course focuses on technical leadership skills through discussion, theory, and practical exercises opposed to general leadership skills for Technical Leaders. We explore the unique combination of skills and experiences that make a “Technical Leader” successful.
Technical Leadership: Learning Outcomes
Day 1: An overview of core technical leadership skills
Morning:
- Explain the breadth of Technical Leadership roles
- Understand why Technical Leaders are necessary
- Describe what makes Technical Leaders unique from other leadership roles
- Can articulate the difference between the Maker and Multiplier mindset
- Outline common challenges of transitioning to a technical leader role and how to manage them
- Explain three simple ways to understand if a technical leader is being effective
Afternoon:
- Identify individual team members’ strengths and where they are useful
- Be able to better manage and prioritise their time
- Better understand how to support and delegate to team members
- Describe different elements of their support network
- Outline the four key components of a technical vision
- Articulate the importance of using models to explain technical vision
- Describe and manage Cross-Functional Requirements
Day 2: Path to Production, Risk Management, Influencing and Conflict Resolution
Morning:
- Describe the differences between systems and software
- Detail the broader elements necessary to make systems successful, and the activities required to manage them
- Describe the differences between risks and issues
- Can identify core technical risks and four management strategies
- Learn an approach for proactively managing technical risks
Afternoon:
- Understand the importance of relationship building when it comes to influence
- Can explain several different ways to build relationships
- Use four different influencing styles
- Use stakeholder mapping to prioritise where to build relationships
- Can describe potential sources of conflict
- Recognise the differences between position versus interest-based negotiation
- Can learn how to better uncover interests from stated positions
- Have a learning path beyond the course
