This course focuses on technical leadership skills through discussion, theory, and practical exercises to set up your Engineering Managers for success.
Effective Engineering Management: Learning Outcomes
Day 1: Exploring the Engineering Manager Role
Morning:
- Definition of the EM role
- Outline the scope of the EM role
- Explore common EM archetypes
- Understand what ¨success¨ looks like as an Engineering Manager
- Uncover the common challenges and how to overcome them
Afternoon:
- Identify and practice an approach to setting expectations and delegating work to the team
- Learn how to approach prioritisation and stakeholder management
- Explore individual differences through strengths and cultural differences, and how to maximise them
- How to approach making decisions and to adapt styles according to the situation
Day 2: People Management and Engineering Productivity
Morning:
- Explore the breadth of people management responsibilities
- Understand the EM’s role in growing people and how to do this
- Explain the differences between effective and ineffective 1- 1s
- Build a coaching mindset and practice using a coaching toolkit
- Learn how to deliver effective feedback
Afternoon:
- Understand the EM’s role in managing quality and productivity
- Learn how to turn a group of people into a high-performing team
- Understand how to improve engineering productivity and avoid the traps of common EM mistakes
- Learn how to manage stakeholders and manage upwards to align on organisational expectations
- Have a learning path beyond the course
